Comment by Bromsgrove Liberal Democrats Chair, Janet King:
Manifesto 2015 is really all about levelling the UK playing field by helping the less well off by raising the income tax level to £12,500 pa, the NHS gets £8bn pa more by 2020 and education funding from nursery to FE college is safeguarded. Wasteful nuclear weapons submarines will be decreased and indefinite immigration detention ended. Our 5 Green Laws will continue our work to preserve the countryside and increase the use of renewable energy ,leaving fossil fuels where they belong(in the ground).
During the coalition we have openly condemned the inefficiencies in the welfare system, which have made nearly 1 million (Trussell Trust figures) referrals to food banks necessary . We need in the next coalition to ensure that
In the dying hours of this Parliament the Home Office tried to sneak in one last blow to asylum-seeking families. Legislation was introduced to increase Section 95 support payments ( the amount paid by HMG to those seeking asylum because they believe that they have a realistic fear of death or persecution in the country from which they fled) to single people over 18 by the tiny amount of 33p per week, but reduce payments for under-16s by a whopping £16 per child per week. There was an outcry from many infuriated organisations supporting asylum seekers. Angry LD4SOS (Liberal Democrats for Seekers of Sanctuary) contacted Liberal Democrat parliamentarians and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Thanks to Nick's intervention with the Home Office, the reductions in payments for under-18s were immediately revoked by fresh legislation. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2015/944/contents/made
