Say Yes on May 5th
Bromsgrove Lib Dems are fully behind the yes to fairer votes campaign and this is reflected by half a page of our A5 election focus. Here are 5 facts you may or may not know about AV!
- The Lib Dems are not the only party backing AV - the Labour leadership, Green Party, UKIP, the English Democrats, the SNP & Plaid Cymru are all saying yes to fairer votes on May 5th.
- A candidate for Parliament can no longer just rely on party support and needs to be the best candidate for all residents of his/her constituency to gain preference and approval - as an MP should be.
- David Cameron is campaigning against AV despite the fact that he won the Conservative party leadership in 2005 with AV after David Davis won the first round of voting. Does he not have faith in the system that elected him leader of his own party?
- Everyone still has one vote - AV is a competitive event where candidates are eliminated until the best two compete in the final. You would still have a say at the final, unlike under the present system.
- A candidate needs 50% approval from constituents meaning extremist parties will be unsuccessful in gaining a seat. No wonder the BNP are campaigning against AV.
