LOCAL LIB DEMS CALL FOR CAR PARK UPGRADES
The ruling Conservative group on Bromsgrove District Council have been challenged by the Liberal Democrats to upgrade the district's car parks.
The calls come as Siobhan Hughes, Lib Dem Councillor for Bromsgrove Central, has laid a motion to be debated at the next full council meeting at the end of the month.
Siobhan's motion calls for Bromsgrove District Council to set an 'ambitious plan' to renew the district's car parks as part of the council's formulation of a new economic strategy which would include an investment plan and a commitment to make Bromsgrove's car parks safer and greener.
The Bromsgrove Liberal Democrat motion also calls for keeping charges low at car parks, particularly in the town centre to encourage more visitors to shop in Bromsgrove High Street which would boost the local economy.
Councillor Hughes expressed 'having worked on the High Street I know the benefits that up-to-date car parks can have on our town.'
She added that upgrading our car parks will 'have a net benefit for our town, increasing spend on our High Street. We need to encourage people to stay as long as they want to, not have to rush back as the parking is running out.'
'Upgrading our car parks will have a net benefit to our town, increasing spend on our High Street and helping us with our bid to become a greener town with the introduction of more electric charging points.'
The text of the motion can be read below:
'As part of the council's formulation of a new economic development strategy, the cabinet must set an ambitious plan for upgrading the district's car parks. This plan will include an investment programme to make our car parks safer, greener, more accessible and more convenient to visitors, whilst keeping charges low.'
