Local Elections 2011 Review
THANK YOU to those 814 voters who had the wisdom to vote Liberal Democrat in Bromsgrove on 5th May. We appreciate your loyalty and support. The results were as follows:
- Linthurst Ward CON hold Janet King second with 244(3 candidates)
- Slideslow CON hold Tom Coe with 432 (4 candidates)
- Whitford LABOUR gain from Con Mike Mihailovic with 92 (8 candidates)
- Wythall South CON hold Sandra Docker with 46 (4 candidates)
The AV referendum did not go our way despite the antics of Janet King as a Suffragette and the delivery of over 8,000 Say Yes leaflets in Bromsgrove. The result was YES 25.9% to NO 74.1% with a 44.7% turn out. One positive was the relatively high turnout at this local election which may have been caused by the referendum.
The blatant and intentional lies of the NO campaign unwisely led by David Cameron and his newspaper helpers brought the result they hoped for but electoral reform is inevitable in the long run otherwise women and men without property would still be unable to vote.
Our aim to have Liberal Democrat representation on Bromsgrove District Council continues so carry on reading this page, which will keep you up to date with our news both local and national.
We are proud of the coalition's hard work to reduce the deficit and to help those on low incomes, to finance more apprenticeships and to fight youth unemployment. 74% of our manifesto promises are now law or before Parliament (higher that the Consrevatives' 60% - BBC figures). These include the scrapping of compulsory ID cards and control orders, the ending of detention for children of asylum seekers (more to do here) and the increase in the income tax threshold by another £1,000, which will eventually bring all wage earners on £10,00pa or below out of taxation completely.
The recent rise in retirement pensions is far more generous than any given by the previous Labour government and the Pupil Premium allows local heads to spend more money for the benefit of the most disadvantaged children. There is so much to do and the Health and Social care Bill is proving difficult. Lib Dems have put in 23 amendments and the consultation is ongoing. If you have any views on this important legislation; please email us. Join us in getting the message to all the electorate that the Lib Dems mean what we say and will continue to work to improve lives.
