CALLS FOR CLARITY ON TIP REOPENING

5 May 2020

Bromsgrove's Lib Dem group are calling for clarity on when recycling centres are due to reopen after Worcestershire County Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment stated last week (1st May) they remained closed in line with Government advice.

The Lib Dems are demanding that they reopen with safe social distancing in place given that Communities Secretary Robert Jenerick's stated the Government "are asking councils to reopen sites as a priority" last week (28th April).

Samuel Evans, speaking for the Bromsgrove Lib Dems said: "It is vital that the County Council reopen recycling centres safely in line with social distancing measures. The lack of access to bulky household waste disposal is a threat to public health, with potential increase in home bonfires due to inadequate access to safe waste disposal."

Birmingham City Council have announced that 4 out of its 5 recycling sites will reopen on Thursday (7th May) and many other local authorities have already reopened their recycling sites.

The Government reiterated calls to reopen recycling centres on Tuesday (5th May) outlining measures for local authorities to do so safely.

Bromsgrove Lib Dems Chair, Josh Robinson echoed Mr Evans' calls adding: "The Government has repeatedly called for councils to act now and other local authorities such as Birmingham are already reopening tips this week. Local residents deserve to know why Bromsgrove is being left behind."
